If it's on the

ground

It's in our

Water

Stormwater runoff is a major threat to our streams, creeks and rivers, but you can help protect them through simple, everyday actions.

Welcome to Kansas City Rain Keepers.

We're here to help keep our waterways clean and free of pollution by sharing small changes in behavior that can make a big difference.

We all live in a watershed, and every action we take—on our lawns and driveways, and in our neighborhoods—affects our shared local creeks, rivers, and lakes.

Did you know?

Your everyday habits impact our water quality.

Stormwater runoff is the biggest problem facing our streams, creeks and rivers today. As rain flows over streets, roofs and yards, it picks up oils, trash, pet waste and chemicals, carrying them directly to waterways through storm sewers, which do not treat water.

Fortunately, there are many things YOU can do to improve water quality AND save money.

Pick up pet waste

When pet waste is left on the ground, it washes into streams and spreads disease-causing bacteria.

Clean up contaminants from home projects

Even small amounts of chemicals, oils, soaps and other contaminants can wash into storm drains and harm local water quality.

Keep a water-wise yard

Optimize water usage in your yard and prevent excess flow into storm drains by capturing natural rainfall and using native plants.

Improve soil naturally

Reduce the amount of chemicals that wash into storm drains and local waterways by using natural fertilizers and compost.

Keep storm drains clear

Anything that blocks a storm drain, like leaves, trash and debris, can cause polluted runoff to backup, or carry contaminants to local waterways.

Harness the power of the rain with a water-wise yard

There are a few simple projects you can do yourself that will support clean water, reduce runoff and beautify your property.

Build a rain barrel

Capture rainwater from downspouts and rooftops for use in your lawn and garden.

Design a rain garden

Rain gardens absorb water more effectively, allowing it to slowly filter to the ground instead of into storm sewers.

Know your soil

Test your soil to reduce water pollution, pick the best plants and help plants thrive.

Redirect downspouts

Instead of sending water to storm sewers in the street, redirect it to gardens or lawns.
